MEP Basics for Homeowners: Electrical, HVAC and Plumbing Explained

Why the invisible systems in your home decide comfort, safety and running cost more than any finish material.

MEP stands for Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing — the three service systems that make a building habitable.

Electrical: power, lighting and wiring

Electrical engineering ensures a building has a safe, reliable and efficient power supply. That means correct load calculation, separate circuits for heavy appliances, proper earthing, ELCB/RCCB protection and a distribution board that is actually labelled. Retrofitting this later means breaking finished walls.

Mechanical: HVAC, heating and cooling

HVAC regulates indoor climate and air quality. Getting tonnage, duct routing, drain slope and outdoor unit placement right at design stage avoids the two classic complaints — a room that never cools and a ceiling that drips.

Plumbing: water supply and drainage

Plumbing covers supply pressure, hot water routing, drainage slope, venting and sanitation. Most seepage problems we are called for are drainage slope or waterproofing failures, not pipe failures.

Design them together

The single biggest saving in MEP is coordination — deciding light points, AC routes and plumbing lines on one drawing before civil work starts.
